Your photos, the faces in them, and the names you give people never leave your computer. Here is exactly what stays there, and the little that doesn’t.
The app
What Ruyaf reads
Ruyaf reads only the folders and drives you choose. It opens JPEG, PNG, and HEIC files and the details stored with them, such as capture date, location, keywords, and XMP sidecars. Your original files are never changed, moved, or uploaded.
What Ruyaf keeps on your computer
Everything Ruyaf makes is stored in its data folder: ~/Library/Application Support/com.ruyaf.peoplefinder on a Mac, or %APPDATA%\com.ruyaf.peoplefinder on Windows. That includes:
- a catalog of the folders you chose, file names, and photo details;
- thumbnails and face crops;
- face embeddings, which are numbers that describe a face so similar faces can be grouped;
- the names, albums, events, covers, and corrections you add.
Face embeddings count as biometric data under some laws. That is one reason they never leave your computer. The face detection and recognition models ship inside the app and run offline.
Removing it
Choose Settings → Remove catalog to delete the catalog, thumbnails, face crops, and custom covers. Deleting the app and its data folder removes everything. Your original photos are not touched either way.
Diagnostic reports
Settings can create a diagnostic report when something goes wrong. It is made only when you click Copy diagnostic report, and it goes to your clipboard. Ruyaf never sends it anywhere. The report contains folder paths, file names, your system version, scan counts, and error messages. It contains no photos, faces, or names of people. If you email it to us, we use it only to help you and delete it once the problem is solved.
Update check
Ruyaf makes no network connections unless you turn on Check for updates in Settings. It is off until you do. When it is on, Ruyaf asks our update server whether a newer version exists. The request includes the app version, your operating system, and your processor type, and the server sees your IP address, as it would for any web request. Nothing about your photos, the people in them, or your library is sent. Updates you choose to install download from the same server.
The people in your photos
Most of the faces Ruyaf groups belong to people other than you. We have no way to see them, and we never will. Our terms ask that you use the index fairly.
This website
This site sets no cookies and uses no analytics, trackers, or embedded media. Its fonts and photos are served from this domain. The company that hosts it keeps standard request logs, such as IP address, browser, page, and time, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. We don’t combine those logs with anything else.
The download button may take you to a file hosted by another service, currently GitHub. That service’s privacy policy covers the download.
If you buy Ruyaf
Orders are handled by our payment provider, which acts as the reseller and is named on your receipt. It collects your payment details under its own privacy policy. We never see your card number.
From each order we receive your name, email address, country, what you bought, and the price paid. We use them to send your license key, help you recover it, answer support requests, process refunds, and meet tax and accounting rules. Order records are kept for as long as those rules require.
Your license key is checked on your computer, offline. Entering it sends nothing anywhere.
When you write to us
If you email us, we keep the conversation so we can answer you and follow up. We don’t add you to a mailing list or share your email with anyone.
Your choices
Because the app keeps everything on your computer, the only information we hold about you is your order and any emails you sent. You can ask us for a copy of it, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, except records we must keep for tax purposes. Write to the address below and we’ll answer within 30 days.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a future version of the app ever sends anything more than the update check described above, we’ll say so here and in the release notes before it ships.
